Freshfields in Turkey

We have the knowledge and experience to advise international clients on their investments in Turkey – and Turkish businesses on operating outside their home country.

With a particularly strong track record in Turkey’s energy and infrastructure markets, we have been advising on M&A transactions in the country for more than 20 years.

We have also advised national and international investors on privatisations of Turkish assets alike, and acted for issuers, underwriters, selling shareholders and Turkish corporates on the capital markets.

In the dispute resolution sphere, we are adept at international arbitration, having advised on disputes in energy, financial services, joint ventures and investment projects.

Client successes

Bilkent is one of the largest public hospitals ever constructed in a single phase in the world.

With a capacity of 3,804 beds, it consists of a core diagnostic centre, six towers that house different medical services, a rehabilitation hospital, a psychiatric hospital, a clinic hotel and an administrative building for the Ministry of Health.

We advised the sponsors on the contracts for the development and operation of the project, eg construction, operations, maintenance and clinical support services.

We also advised on the finance and security agreements required to obtain limited recourse finance for the project.

The dispute related to the price for the repurchase of branded restaurants in Turkey.

The resulting International Chamber of Commerce arbitration is governed by Turkish law and seated in Zurich.

The disputes related to the alleged expropriation of power plants in Antalya. The claims, valued at more than $18bn, were dismissed and the client was awarded almost $25m in costs.
